French Polynesia is, perhaps, best described by one word – romantic. We caught up with Debora Roberts, a business development manager for Tahiti Nui Travel, to get the scoop on why the Tahitian islands are the perfect getaway for couples.
Q: What makes the islands of Tahiti the perfect getaway for couples?
Simply put, the islands of Tahiti are the most beautiful islands in the world. The diversity and the beauty of each island make them unique and incomparable. French Polynesia is made up of 118 small isolated islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Here, you have exotic flowers and fragrances, pristine turquoise lagoons, vibrant sunsets, private beachfront candlelit dinners, picnics for two on secluded motus (small islets), small resorts instead of mass market tourism and, most importantly, the birthplace of the overwater bungalow!
Q: What’s the best time of year to visit?
Tahiti is a year-round destination, and these islands record some of the highest hours of sunshine in the world. Keep in mind the cool and dry season is between April and October, and the warmer, higher humidity season is from November to March. The average temperature is around 80°F.
Q: What’s the ideal vacation length for a trip to the Tahitian islands?
I’d say seven to 10 days is the perfect amount of time, allowing travelers to visit two or three islands. The islands of Tahiti are only an eight-hour flight from the West Coast and are in the same time zone as Hawaii. It’s a quick overnight flight, and you wake up in paradise.
Q: What’s the best way to get from island to island?
From Tahiti (Papeete) to Moorea, the best mode of transportation is a high-speed catamaran. We have a few companies who operate regularly throughout the day. It’s an easy 45-minute, air-conditioned journey. To Bora Bora and the other islands in French Polynesia, Air Tahiti, our domestic air carrier, has frequent flights.
Q: If travelers want to explore more than one island, which islands do you recommend combining?
It’s very easy to combine islands in one visit. Bora Bora is a must-see with the iconic Mt. Otemanu and her stunning lagoon. Moorea is full of activities and offers the opportunity to explore via car or boat. Taha’a is our vanilla island, and it’s quiet and romantic. Rangiroa is a mecca for snorkelers, scuba-divers and those wanting to fish. And for the adventure seekers, we offer the Aranui 5 cruise. This 13-night voyage sets sail aboard a half-passenger / half-freight ship and explores the remote Marquesas Islands. These dramatic, lush islands offer true cultural experiences, ancient Mea’e (sacred ritual sites), archeological sites, and Polynesian legends.
Q: What’s a bucket list experience travelers shouldn’t miss when visiting the Islands of Tahiti?
There’s not one, but many…
