Not Your Mama's Asia

More Americans are traveling to Asia now than ever before. The strong dollar, increased lift, brand new hotels, and plenty of cruise options, all contribute to Asia's growth as the fastest growing region for travelers – and one day soon, it will be the mainstream.

As vast as it is diverse and delicious, there is a time and place for every visitor. In the cooler months, the beaches of Southeast Asia are a welcome reprieve. Spring time bursts with color and the popular sakura viewings (cherry blossom festivals) take place throughout Japan. During the fall, the countryside of China comes alive in a showy display of colorful foliage and golden rice paddies on terraced mountains.

Over the past five years, cities have changed skylines and the tourism infrastructure has improved greatly. Throughout the continent, there are plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences waiting to be had. Here are our 5 favorite -

1. Take the toboggan down the Great Wall - China

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall can also be a great thrill. From the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, walk or take a cable car up to the top of the mountain and explore the watchtowers. Then slide down the hill from Zhengguan Terrace – fun for all ages!

2. Sushi making in a Tokyo home – Japan

Be a welcomed guest in a typical Japanese apartment to learn the art of sushi, while getting a glimpse of daily home life in this bustling city. Impress your friends and family with your newly acquired skills of rolled “maki” sushi, individual “gunkan maki” sushi, and individual “nigari” sushi.

3. Cai Be floating market in the Mekong Delta - Vietnam

Away from the buzzing traffic of Ho Chi Minh City, the green landscape and wide Mekong River hosts a colorful floating market full of surprises. A feast for the senses, learn how vendors sell their goods the old fashioned way.

4. Have lunch with a local Lanna family near Chiang Mai - Thailand

In northern Thailand, get aquatinted with their village life in a traditional Lanna community where you'll share a typical meal in a traditional teak wood house. Discover the family’s ancestral roots and see how their culture lives on in modern times.

5. Build a house in Siem Reap with Husk Charity - Cambodia

Spend the day helping a Cambodian family build a house in the jungles surrounding the famed Angkor Wat. Your contribution will not only leave you feeling humbled and inspired, but your efforts will impact a community for years to come.
