Cruising & Special Events
Cruising to a Special Event
Thinking about attending the Rio Carnival, Monaco Grand Prix or Wimbledon and not sure how to go about it? Consider going on a cruise ship.
- Cruise lines frequently arrange to be in a city where something special is happening. You get to live aboard, using the ship as a hotel during the event making it a really convenient way to attend.
- Lines also arrange excursions so you can enjoy the event without the worry of how to get to and from the venue when the city is abuzz with activity. All the logistics are taken care of so you can just enjoy the show.
Here's a roundup of upcoming events cruise ships will attend:
- Windstar Cruises sails the Riviera during the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film festival each May.
- Azamara Club Cruises has a four-day Monaco Grand Prix sailing planned for May 26, 2011.
- Silversea's Silver Spirit will overnight in Monaco during the Grand Prix in 2011.
- Crystal Cruises has VIP excursions with access to insider parties and events for Wimbledon and the British Open.
- Astronomy buffs find cruising to be the ideal way to see an Eclipse as ships can often sail to the perfect spot for viewing, away from the lights of land. The ms Paul Gauguin will do just that in the waters of French Polynesia this July 11 for viewing of the Total Solar Eclipse. The next one takes place November 13, 2012. We'll be watching for announcements about cruising to this event.
- Holland America Line's Westerdam can take you to the Edinburgh Tattoo, part of the renowned Edinburgh Festival in Scotland this August. The Tattoo has become an annual event for the line with an excursion taking you to and from the event in comfort.
-
Join in the fun at the Rio Carnival with these options:
- RCI's Splendour of the Seas, sails a seven-day Brazil-Uruguay-Carnival cruise March 4, 2011.

Watching Special Events Aboard Ship
- Don't worry about missing the game while at sea. With satellite TV on board, you can keep track of the game when you're in your stateroom or on screens around the ship.
- Cruise lines also negotiate to broadcast world class events. For the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, Azamara Club Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International have obtained rights to air all games while at sea in international waters on every ship across the three fleets.
- For the Academy Awards, Royal Princess even put down a red carpet for guests to walk as they entered the lounge where the show was broadcast on big screens. Movie themed cocktails were added to the menu and there was a contest to name the winners, all adding to a festive evening.
So don't think you'll miss out on the fun by being on a cruise during your favourite event. Cruising could be the best way to enjoy it!
